"Advocacy : Lessons from Leadership and Working with People who Stutter"

Speaker: Craig Coleman, MA, CCC-SLP

Abstract: This session will focus on discussing specific advocacy strategies for speech-language pathologists to use in various aspects of their professional work. Discussion will focus on the advocacy necessary to effectively work with people who stutter (and with other communication disorders) and effectively lead professional organizations and institutions.

Learner Outcomes: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify advocacy strategies for improved reimbursement and positive legislative change.

  2. Identify advocacy strategies necessary for successful intervention in communication disorders.

  3. Identify self-advocacy strategies to help attain professional goals.

  4. Discuss leadership skills necessary to help colleagues advocate for change in the work setting.

Town Hall Meeting from PSHA President

Speaker: Nancy Carlino, MA, CCC-SLP

Abstract: The town hall portion of the Naomi Landy workshop will address current legislative issues, including tele-practice waivers, the status of the Behavioral Specialist license bill, and current legislation that PSHA is supporting. In addition, participants will be informed of the status of the Interstate Compact, PSHA and ASHA advocacy efforts, and PDE certification updates.

Learner Outcomes: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss methods to engage in advocacy

  2. Acknowledge the importance of participating in the Interstate Compact

  3. Verbalize current legislative issues pertinent to SLPs and audiologists in PA.

Speaker Bios and Disclosures:

Craig Coleman is the Chairperson in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Edinboro University and Vice President of Planning for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Craig is a Board-Certified Specialist in Stuttering and previously served as Coordinator for ASHA Special Interest Group 4: Fluency and Fluency Disorders. Craig is a former two-term President of the Pennsylvania Speech-Language-Hearing Association and an ASHA Fellow

Financial Disclosure: Craig Coleman receives a salary from and will be referencing Edinboro University during his presentation. He receives royalty payments as an author from Stuttering Therapy Resources.

Nancy Carlino is an Assistant Professor at California University of Pennsylvania. She is the Program Coordinator and Externship Director for the graduate program in Communication Disorders. Professor Carlino teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses and supervises students in the CMD Speech and Hearing Clinic. Current scholarship interests are in clinical education. Nancy has presented at state and national conferences and has co-authored two articles on clinical education. She currently serves as President of the Pennsylvania Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Clinically, Nancy has worked for over 30 years as a medical speech-language pathologist with patients with neurogenic disorders. She is currently a consulting speech-language pathologist in home health and rehabilitation settings.

ASHA Revisited
